“Having lived in four or five countries (depending on how you count), I think of home more in terms of people than places. I still usually say I’m from Michigan, and being from Michigan comes with a lot of pride in our lakes, cars, kindness, colleges, cherries, quirks...However, in growing up and moving away and back several times the systemic injustices in my home state have become much more visible to me and it can be hard to be anything but critical.
